St. George's Donuts has been a Springfield institution since Charles and Katy St. George glazed the store's first batch of donuts in 1971. Nick, the second generation of the St. George family, now owns and operates it's Springfield location at 3628 E. Sunshine, as well as a second location in Ozark.
The E. Sunshine location recently reopened after an extensive renovation that included additional seating, updated decor, a more modern kitchen, and a 22-foot mural of donuts with the slogan “Make Life Sweeter.” St. George’s is planning to celebrate its 50th anniversary in July 2021.
While much has changed in 50 years, the most important element of St. George’s is the same today as it was in 1971: the donuts. The painstaking process of making hundreds of donuts in about 60 varieties begins each day at 1 a.m. Every donut is completely handmade from scratch, including the icing. And St. George’s never sells a day-old donut.
Donut flavors include red velvet, blueberry, Oreo, and Butterfinger caramel, as well as the more traditional glazed and chocolate. The menu also includes a variety of specialty donuts and pastries, as well as coffee and espresso provided by local roaster Mudhouse Coffee.
St. George’s Apple Fritter was named the Best Donut in Missouri by MSN Lifestyle in 2018, and the brand was recognized in Feast Magazine’s Reader’s Choice Survey, the Feast 50, in 2019 and 2020.
